Crazy Horse

Today was one of the coolest days of being in SD thus far.

All of the National Parks in Western South Dakota had a training day at Crazy Horse Monument.
Crazy Horse was a Sioux Chief who fought in some incredible battles, etc., and now they are in the midst of carving a massive sculpture of him here in the Black Hills.  It's currently the largest sculpture in the world, and I got the chance to stand on top of it at 6500 ft! So sweet.

Crazy Horse

Crazy Horse is sexy.
6500 ft up in the air!

The training consisted of these Lakota Indians who gave us all a crash course in Sioux culture.  They also shook these feathers that they lit on fire at us, which "purified" us... apparently I need purification?

The 4 National Parks in the SD Black Hills also had the opportunity to discuss their individual interpretive ranger programs, as well as special events that are going on in the summer season.  A representative from Badlands National Park, an hour and a half east of Mt. Rushmore, talked about how the Badlands were originally used by the US government as a bombing field; in plugging his park, the rep says, "Yea, there are actually some active mines still on the property... there is a chance you could get blown up..."  Is that supposed to draw tourists to the Badlands??
